The legend of Skrei

Every year the miracle repeats itself: The Skrei is faithful to its winter appointment with the Lofoten Islands, since the dawn of time. Its arrival marks the rhythm of life of its inhabitants, giving rise to countless legends and traditions. Skrei is an old Norwegian word and means "Nomad". When they reach sexual maturity, they feel the irrepressible desire to migrate thousands of miles to spawn. The destination: After a long journey, they arrive in the area of the Lofoten Islands, a spectacular Norwegian archipelago, located in the north of the country. Why there? In the area of the Lofoten Islands are the best waters for their roe, since: they are crystal clear, calm, and protected by fjords. They have the ideal temperature, the warmest in the area thanks to the passage of the Gulf of Mexico sea current. It is the place where they were born, and to it, they return for the next generation to be born. What makes cod Skrei? It is precisely the journey, the thousands of kilometers of swimming and feeding during the great adventure, which turns cod into Skrei. Throughout this journey, their diet is modified and their muscles are exercised, thus developing a firm, white flesh with enough fat for spawning, which requires a lot of energy, without being a fatty fish.
